Chestnut harvesting is great fun for the whole family. OPG Dvije Sove owns about 8 ha of old indigenous forest in which chestnut trees grow naturally.
Croatia's Banovina and Kordun region is the largest natural chestnut habitat in Europe. It is time to collect chestnuts at the end of September and the beginning of October. Chesnats can be collected in our forest or nearby forests that is owned by Croatian Forests Ltd.
The best way to collect the chestnuts is to collect the fruits after they fall off the trees alone. It is not recommended to shake the trees as this can lead to the fall of immature fruits or damage the tree. Fruits that fall from the tree should be picked up within two days, or forest animals will eat them. Protective gloves should be worn when picking chestnuts, as the thorns are very strong. Some people wear two pairs of gloves, rubber and leather. Chestnuts can be consumed in a number of ways. The most famous are roasted and cooked chestnuts, chestnut puree, chestnut cakes and gluten-free chestnut bread.
